Having a dead battery in your BMW is no fun but with a starter power supply you can be back on the road in no time. Here’s a quick guide on how to start your BMW with a starter power supply also known as a jump starter or portable battery pack.
1. Get Your Gear
Before you start make sure you have:
-
Starter power supply (charged)
-
Vehicle cables with clamp connectors
-
Safety gear (gloves and eye protection)
-
Vehicle manual (for reference)
2. Prepare the BMW
-
Put the BMW in park (automatic) or neutral (manual) and engage the parking brake.
-
Turn off all accessories like lights and radio to minimize battery drain.

3. Connect the Starter Power Supply
-
Open the hood of your BMW and find the battery. It’s usually near the engine compartment.
-
Put on your safety gear to protect yourself from sparks or acid spills.
-
Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal of the BMW battery (marked with a +).
-
Connect the black clamp to the negative terminal (marked with a - or GND). Don’t attach it to any moving parts.
4. Start the BMW
-
Once the clamps are attached turn on the starter power supply if it has a power switch.
-
Try to start your BMW. If it turns over and starts, good! Let it run for a few minutes to charge the battery slightly.
5. Disconnect the Starter Power Supply
-
Once the BMW is running, disconnect the black clamp from the negative terminal first.
-
Then disconnect the red clamp.
-
Close the hood and go.
Now you can start your BMW with a starter power supply. Don’t forget to keep your portable battery pack charged and in your glove box for next time.
