We’ve all been there: you get in the car, turn the key and… nothing. A dead battery can ruin your day but don’t worry! With a jump starter you can be back on the road in no time. Let’s go through it together.
1. Get Your Jump Starter Charged
Before you start make sure your jump starter is fully charged. If it’s not plug it into an outlet until it is. A fully charged jump starter means you have enough power to bring your car back to life.
2. Turn Everything Off
Make sure all electronics in the car are turned off. This includes the headlights, radio and any other devices plugged in. You don’t want any unnecessary drain on the battery while you’re trying to jump it.
3. Find the Battery Terminals
Pop the hood and find your car’s battery. Look for the two metal terminals—one will have a + for positive and the other a - for negative. You’ll need these for the next step.
4. Attach the Cables
Get your jump starter cables. First connect the red clamp to the positive terminal (+) of the car battery. Then connect the black clamp to the negative terminal (-). Make sure the clamps are secure and not touching each other.
5. Turn On the Jump Starter
Turn on your jump starter. Most have a power button or switch. Once it’s on wait a few seconds to let the power flow to the car battery.
6. Start Your Car
Now get back in your car and turn the key or press the start button. Hopefully your engine will roar back to life. If it doesn’t start right away wait a minute and try again.
7. Disconnect the Jump Starter
Once your car is running carefully remove the jump starter. First remove the black (negative) clamp then the red (positive) clamp. Be careful not to let the clamps touch each other or any metal part of the car.
8. Let the Engine Run
Leave your engine running for at least 10-15 minutes. This will recharge the battery enough so you won’t need to jump start it again right away.
9. Store the Jump Starter
When you’re done turn off the jump starter and store it in a safe place in your car. It’s always good to have it ready for next time!
10. Know When to Replace Your Battery
If your car needs to be jump started frequently it’s time for a new battery. Keep an eye on it and get it tested at a shop.
